Things

Obi-Wan Moments

Rinpoche holds a white toy car before his face.
The grown-up has it now.

For a Grown-up

A white car rests on a finger. Its wheels shine; doors and windows are all in place. Facing left, it hides Rinpoche’s mouth. Above it are his eyes, looking down towards the little car.

It is a child’s gift to an adult. In December 2016 this is how Rinpoche introduces it, naming the giver as a child and the recipient as an adult.

The little car has been made with care: a rounded roof, wheels standing proud of the body. The grown-up holds it up and his face recedes behind it. It is a good arrangement, giving something so small the foreground.

Before a Word Is Written

The pleasure of a fountain pen sometimes comes before writing. An ink bottle is open. A hand lowers the pen into its mouth, pauses, and lifts it again. The slender barrel catches the light; the ink is dark.

Ha....Joy of fountain pen. Rinpoche’s opening Ha seems to find the pleasure before any sentences have had their turn.

The pleasure comes before the words.

The bottle stays on the table; the pen enters and leaves its little opening. He finds something to enjoy even in this preparation.

Mr Frog

There is a frog in a palm. Green at first, it lights up yellow, then turns red. Its bulging eyes stay where they are. The palm is small; this frog has no plans to leap out.

Rinpoche calls it Mr frog. With this form of address, the little thing acquires a certain standing.

Mr Frog changes colour.

Another gift, from a young man, is a little cube with buttons. A fingertip presses the red buttons; the cube turns, offering another part to move.

He is quite clear about its purpose: to kill time. He writes TIME in capitals. Such a large word; in the hand it has become a very small thing, something to turn over and play with.

So this is the size of TIME.
